BSR-02 Bactericidal Unit
Can UV-C help prevent the transmission of COVID-19 by reducing contamination?
The answer is a resounding YES.
UV-C radiation, the short-wave ultraviolet rays filtered by the atmosphere, has a powerful germicidal effect discovered in the 19th century. These rays are absorbed by the RNA and DNA of microorganisms, altering them to prevent reproduction.
UV-C-based solutions are used as part of disinfection/sterilization cycles to prevent and reduce the spread of infectious diseases, viruses, bacteria, and other harmful microorganisms, particularly in medical facilities.
UV-C light has been used extensively for over 40 years to disinfect water, air, and surfaces against a wide range of pathogens. Hundreds of tested viruses, including other coronaviruses, respond to UV-C when appropriate doses are applied*. While some organisms are mhours susceptible to UV-C disinfection than others, all tested to date have responded to the correct doses.
ELBA’s BSR Range
ELBA’s BSR product line has a long-standing tradition of success, having been used for over 30 years on the European market.
Applications in Healthcare:
Intensive Care Units (ICU)
ICUs often cannot relocate patients, many of whom are intubated and mechanically ventilated, to disinfect the room. UV-C lamps can sterilize the area by indirect irradiation (lamps oriented toward the ceiling) or by targeting surfaces (e.g., a vacated bed surrounded by screens). Placing a UV-C lamp approximately 1 meter above the bed can sterilize the surface in 15 minutes, ensuring a safe environment for the next patient.
Operating Rooms
Maintaining a sterile environment during surgical interventions is critical to preventing complications. UV-C disinfection is performed through two distinct processes:
- Befhours the operating room is occupied, UV-C radiation is applied to all surfaces for approximately 15 minutes. Lamps must be turned off befhours personnel and patients enter.
- Indirect air irradiation is maintained continuously with ceiling-oriented lamps to ensure a sterile atmosphere and prevent airborne transmission of microorganisms.
Consultation Rooms
UV-C doses vary based on the distance between the light source and the irradiated area and the exposure time.
- 1 x 15W UV-C Lamp: Effective area: 6-8 m²; sterilized air volume: 18 m³.
- 1 x 30W UV-C Lamp: Effective area: 12-15 m²; sterilized air volume: 36 m³.
- 2 x 30W UV-C Lamps: Effective area: 10-18 m²; sterilized air volume: 25-60 m³.
Other Healthcare Applications:
- Waiting Rooms: Use 15W or 30W UV-C lamps to disinfect the air four times within an 8-hour period, each session lasting 15 minutes in the absence of people.
- Locker Rooms and Pharmacies: Disinfection follows the same protocol, ensuring clean air and surfaces.
- Elderly Care Homes: Disinfection applies to common areas (dining halls, social spaces) and individual rooms.
Industrial Applications:
- Dining Areas, Locker Rooms, and Restrooms: 15W and 30W UV-C lamps are recommended, with disinfection sessions conducted four times daily for 15 minutes in the absence of personnel.
- Offices and Workstations: Portable UV-C units can be used for targeted disinfection, varying with distance and exposure time.
Additional Applications:
- Sports Halls
- Kindergartens
- Schools and Universities
- Public Institutions
- Automotive Services
- HoReCa
Important!
To ensure effective disinfection, the appropriate UV-C dose and exposure time must be identified.
